It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but the Laney Buccaneers ultimately got the result they hoped for on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 57-55 win over Hoggard. The victory was just what Laney needed coming off of a 82-52 loss in their prior matchup.
Laney's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Trenton Hall, who scored six points along with five steals. Another player making a difference was Jaquan Bowen, who scored 11 points.
Hoggard lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Malakahi West, who scored eight points along with six rebounds and five steals. West is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayzion Davis, who scored 11 points along with two steals.
Laney pushed their record up to 15-2 with that victory, which was their sixth straight on the road. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.8 points per game. As for Hoggard, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-7.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Laney will take on West Brunswick at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. West Brunswick will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 315th, while Laney is ranked 38th). As for Hoggard, they will head out on the road to face off against North Brunswick at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully North Brunswick focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Friday.
