The Margaretta Polar Bears will face off against the Hopewell-Loudon Chieftains at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Margaretta is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
Margaretta fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Port Clinton on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Redskins by a score of 6-5. The Polar Bears have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Cassidy Lane put in work no matter where she played. She struck out 15 batters over 7.2 innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. Lane was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, Lucy Edwards was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. That home run marked the first that she launched this season. Another player making a difference was Mattie Kovalaske, who went 1-for-4 with one home run.
Meanwhile, Hopewell-Loudon wound up with the same score they had in their last game (9-3), but sadly the team found themselves on the wrong side of the score this time. The loss was their first of the season.
Like Margaretta, Hopewell-Loudon also got a great game from a two-way player: Araceli Velasquez. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and eight unearned) runs off four hits. Velasquez has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-4.
Velasquez wasn't the only one making solid contact as seven players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Mallory Rowe, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.
Margaretta now has a losing record of 2-3. As for Hopewell-Loudon, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 3-1.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Saturday. Margaretta hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.4 home runs per game. However, it's not like Hopewell-Loudon struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.5 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Margaretta suffered a grim 6-0 defeat to Hopewell-Loudon in their previous meeting back in April of 2023. Will the Polar Bears have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
