The Monticello Buckaroo can finally bid farewell to their four-game losing streak thanks to their game on Tuesday. They managed a 50-45 win over Whitehorse. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Monticello also won the last time the pair played back in February of 2023.
Leading Monticello to victory were Curtis Bunker and Mason Atwood. Bunker scored 12 points along with six assists and five rebounds, while Atwood dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Atwood has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaden Pehrson, who scored three points along with five assists and three steals.
Whitehorse's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Lyric Phillips, who scored 21 points. That was a full 46.7% of Whitehorse's points, marking the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Larenz Tsosie was another key contributor, scoring 12 points.
Monticello's win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 3-9. As for Whitehorse, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-7.
Monticello will be playing in front of their home fans against Grand County at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Grand County knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past eight matchups -- so hopefully Monticello likes a good challenge. As for Whitehorse, they will head out on the road to square off against Northwest at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in their respective states (Northwest is ranked 148th in New Mexico, while Whitehorse is ranked 123rd in Utah).
