The Perry Pirates will venture away from home to square off against the Madison Blue Streaks at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Perry is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.5 runs per game this season.
Perry had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 13-run drubbing they dealt Conneaut on Wednesday. The Pirates blew past the Spartans 16-3. The win continues a trend for the Pirates in their matchups with the Spartans: they've now won three in a row.
Morgan Winters made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off two hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Perry got a massive performance out of Madeline Infalvi, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Sydney Collins, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.
Perry was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .529. They are a perfect 7-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, Madison unfortunately witnessed the end of their five-game winning streak on Wednesday. They lost 7-1 to Edgewood. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Blue Streaks have suffered against the Warriors since April 29, 2022.
Like Perry, Madison also got a great game from a two-way player: Kara Mekulsia. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over six innings while giving up three earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. Mekulsia was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
Mekulsia wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Gianna LaMarco, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base.
Perry's record now sits at 10-5. As for Madison, their loss dropped their record down to 9-2.
Both the two teams just can't seem to miss. Perry has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 11.5 hits per game. However, it's not like Madison struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 3.9 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Perry was able to grind out a solid victory over Madison in their previous matchup on April 7th, winning 6-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Pirates since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
