Spearfish has enjoyed a four-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will square off against the Custer Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Spearfish focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 12 on Saturday.
Last Saturday, things could have been worse for Spearfish, but they could have been a whole lot better as they took a 59-45 loss to Mitchell. While losing is never fun, Spearfish can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Dakota basketball rankings (they are ranked 60th, while Mitchell is ranked third).
Despite their defeat, Spearfish saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Bennett Kortan, who scored ten points along with six steals, was perhaps the best of all. The team also got some help courtesy of Seth Hamilton, who scored 14 points along with five rebounds.
In what's become a running theme this season, Custer gave their fans yet another huge victory on Saturday. They were the clear victor by a 62-38 margin over Belle Fourche.
Spearfish now has a losing record at 6-7. As for Custer, they pushed their record up to 11-5 with that victory, which was their fourth straight on the road.
Spearfish took their win against Custer when the teams last played back in February of 2023 by a conclusive 75-52. The rematch might be a little tougher for Spearfish since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
