The Las Animas Trojans will be defending their home-field for the first timethey go up against the Walsenburg Panthers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams are strolling into their matchups after big wins in their previous games.
Las Animas is coming home in high spirits after they had to open their season on the road against Sangre de Cristo. Las Animas blew past Sangre de Cristo 46-24 on Friday.
Orion Martinez went supernova for Las Animas, rushing for 243 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 8.1 yards per carry, and also picking up 56 receiving yards and a touchdown. Martinez got the majority of those yards when he pulled down a pass and and took off for a gain of56 yards. Another player making a difference was Braydon Ortiz, who rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown on only six carries.
Las Animas wouldn't let Sangre de Cristo keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force six fumbles. Logan Servaes and Ortiz were the leaders of the group effort as each produced two apiece. Martinez also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, forcing a fumble and making six total tackles (2.0 for loss).
Meanwhile, Walsenburg took care of business in their home opener on Friday (and then some). They took their game at home with ease, bagging a 64-36 win over Lyons.
Giovanni Aldretti was nothing short of spectacular: he rushed for 302 yards and four touchdowns on only 14 carries, and also picked up 93 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Another player making a difference was Taylor Torres, who rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown on only nine carries.
Walsenburg's defense was in the mix too, especially the secondary: they snagged three passes before it was all said and done. The picks came courtesy of Adrian Vallejos and Aldretti. Vallejos also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, making five total tackles and defending two passes in addition to snagging two interceptions.
