San Ysidro is 1-9 against Sweetwater since April of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Cougars will be playing in front of their home fans against the Red Devils at 3:30 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
San Ysidro managed to slip by Lincoln the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Cougars came up short against the Hornets on Monday, falling 21-13. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Mary Ellen Valenzuela stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: she went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Julia Rosales was another key player, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with three stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Sweetwater waltzed into their match on Thursday with two straight wins... but they left with three. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Trojans a 19-0 shutout. Considering the Red Devils have won 12 contests by more than six runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Tatyana Mosqueda and Gabriella Sena made a big impact no matter where they played. On the mound, Mosqueda tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Sena pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Mosqueda has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 13 consecutive appearances. At the plate, Mosqueda went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double, while Sena earned one RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Ariana Tovar was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with four runs, two stolen bases, and five RBI. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Layla Silva, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and five RBI.
Sweetwater was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .448. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .448 or higher in three consecutive games.
Sweetwater pushed their record up to 14-2-1 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.3 runs over those games. As for San Ysidro, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-7.
Tuesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. San Ysidro has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .610. However, it's not like Sweetwater struggles in that department as they've averaged .557. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
