Northwest is a perfect 3-0 against Columbia Central since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Mounties will be playing in front of their home fans against the Golden Eagles at 4:00 p.m. Northwest is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.8 runs per game this season.
Northwest came out on top against Clinton on Thursday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run third inning. The Mounties took their game against the Redwolves 8-5. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Mounties.
Lucy Bivens (2025) made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits. Bivens (2025) was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two RBI and one run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Shannon Christner (2028), who went 1-for-4 with one home run and four RBI. That home run was her first of the season. Ava Golightly (2025) was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base.
Meanwhile, Columbia Central put another one in the bag on Monday to keep their perfect season alive. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Vandercook Lake a 15-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the Golden Eagles, who have now won five contests by seven runs or more so far this season.
Like Northwest, Columbia Central also got a great game from a two-way player: Hailey Wetherby. On the mound, she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 11 over four innings pitched. Wetherby has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of her four plate appearances with two RBI and one run.
In other batting news, Columbia Central let Gabby Gaydosh and Kelsey Fausz run wild. Gaydosh got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI, while Fausz got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Savannah MacBlain, who earned one RBI and three runs.
Columbia Central's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-0. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.6 runs over those games. As for Northwest, their win bumped their record up to 3-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Northwest has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Columbia Central struggles in that department as they've been averaging 10.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Northwest was able to grind out a solid victory over Columbia Central in their previous matchup back in May of 2017, winning 6-1. Will the Mounties repeat their success, or do the Golden Eagles have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
