The Albuquerque Academy Chargers's road trip will continue as they head out to face the Belen Eagles at 12:30 p.m. on January 20th. Hopefully Albuquerque Academy focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 18 on Tuesday.
Last Tuesday, Albuquerque Academy came up short against St. Pius X and fell 44-33.
Despite their loss, Albuquerque Academy saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Addie Spratley, who scored 11 points, was perhaps the best of all. Another player making a difference was Noelani Montoya, who scored eight points along with five rebounds.
Albuquerque Academy struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. That's the fewest assists they've managed all season.
Belen suffered their biggest loss yet this season on Thursday. They were beaten by Gallup 60-23. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Belen has scored all season.
Despite the defeat, Belen saw an underclassman step up: Danilynn Bob scored nine points.
Albuquerque Academy's loss was their third straight on the road, which bumped their record down to 8-5. As for Belen, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-8.
Saturday's matchup is shaping up to be a scrappy matchup: Albuquerque Academy have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 29.8 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Belen, though, as they've been averaging only 1.6 rebounds per game. Given Albuquerque Academy's sizeable advantage in that area, Belen will need to find a way to close that gap.
Albuquerque Academy strolled past Belen in their previous meeting back in January of 2023 by a score of 47-29. The rematch might be a little tougher for Albuquerque Academy since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
