The Greenville Comets will head out on the road to square off against the Hillsboro Hiltoppers at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Greenville has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last four games.
Greenville can now show off nine landslide victories after their most recent match on Thursday. They breezed by Litchfield on the road to the tune of 57-12. Given Greenville's advantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 161st, while the Purple Panthers are ranked 599th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Greenville got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Emma Veith out in front who scored 17 points along with three steals. Another player making a difference was Katie Campbell, who dropped a double-double on ten points and ten rebounds.
Meanwhile, Hillsboro had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 16 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Monday. They claimed a resounding 54-26 win over Pana on the road. Hillsboro pushed the score to 48-15 by the end of the third, a deficit the Panthers cut but never quite recovered from.
Greenville's victory bumped their record up to 16-9. As for Hillsboro, their win bumped their record up to 14-15.
Greenville didn't have too much breathing room in their game against the Hiltoppers when the teams last played back in February of 2023, but they still walked away with a 51-47 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Greenville since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
