The Westerly Bulldogs are taking a road trip to challenge the South Kingstown Rebels at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Westerly will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each game than the last.
Westerly is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Rhode Island's top teams: East Providence, who was ranked 11th at the time (Westerly was ranked tenth). The Bulldogs came out on top against the Townies by a score of 10-7 on Friday. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Bulldogs as it put an end to their five-game losing streak.
The team relied heavily on Addison Poole, who fired off two home runs, three runs, and three RBI while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Bella Mazzarese, who went 1-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.
They weren't the only ones working in the home run department: Westerly lost a few balls and finished the game with four home runs. That's the most home runs they've posted since the start of last season.
Meanwhile, South Kingstown came up short against Barrington on Thursday, falling 10-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Rebels have suffered against the Eagles since May 17, 2018.
Abigail O'Connor was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. That double marked the first that she has hit this season. Lyndee Conley was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.
Westerly picked up their first road win, bumping their record up to 6-7. As for South Kingstown, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-8.
Saturday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Westerly hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .315. However, it's not like South Kingstown struggles in that department as they've averaged .419. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Westerly took their victory against South Kingstown when the teams last played back in April by a conclusive 12-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Bulldogs since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
