The Cactus Shadows Falcons will square off against the Coconino Panthers at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Cactus Shadows is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.4 runs per game this season.
Cactus Shadows is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering Mica Mountain just ended the team's 13-game winning streak on Saturday. They fell 4-0 to the Thunderbolts. The matchup marked the first time this year in which the Falcons were not able to get on the board.
Cactus Shadows got a good showing from Molly Brown, who tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.
At the plate, Cactus Shadows saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Caylee Cundall, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base. Cundall has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times she's played.
Meanwhile, after only two runs in their last game, Coconino made sure to put some runs up on the board against Sahuarita on Thursday. The Panthers were the clear victors by a 14-4 margin over the Mustangs. Considering the Panthers have won 15 contests by more than six runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Jade Sandoval spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on six hits and racked up seven Ks.
On the hitting side, Emma Kennelly was incredible, firing off two home runs, three runs, and four RBI while going 3-for-5. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Katelynn Yazzie, who went 3-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI.
Coconino lost a few balls and finished the game with five home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Coconino is on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 13 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 22-8 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.2 runs on average over those games. As for Cactus Shadows, their loss dropped their record down to 21-8.
Tuesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Cactus Shadows hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .385. However, it's not like Coconino struggles in that department as they've averaged .345. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Cactus Shadows got the 'W' in their previous matchup back in March against Coconino by a conclusive 11-4 score. Will the Falcons repeat their success, or do the Panthers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
