The Walnut Grove Wildcats will square off against the St. Thomas Catholic Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the pair will really light up the scoreboard.
Walnut Grove can finally bid farewell to their six-game losing streak thanks to their game on Friday. They breezed by Cathedral on the road to the tune of 61-7. Given Walnut Grove's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 436th, while Cathedral is ranked 1052nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Braden Butler and Cameron Newton were among the main playmakers for Walnut Grove as the former threw for 179 yards and five touchdowns while completing 73.1% of his passes and the latter rushed for 111 yards and three touchdowns on only nine carries. Newton was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 50 yards.
Walnut Grove's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB three times. Leading the way was AJ Hickey and his two sacks.
Meanwhile, St. Thomas Catholic put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their undefeated season alive. They claimed a resounding 49-21 win over Concordia Lutheran at home. St. Thomas Catholic's offense checked out after the first half but had enough points banked to take the game anyway.
St. Thomas Catholic haved a senior duo take command as Donte Lewis rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns and Johann Cardenas rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 carries. Cardenas is on a roll when it comes to rushing yards, as he's now rushed for 100 or more in the last five games he's played.
Their wins bumped Walnut Grove to 2-6 and St. Thomas Catholic to 7-0.
We should be in store for an exciting game Friday as both teams have no problem gaining yardage. Walnut Grove has been on an offensive roll this season, having averaged 467.5 total yards per game. However, it's not like St. Thomas Catholic struggles in that department as they've been even better at 524.1 per game. With a pair of commanding offenses duking it out, the defenses are going to have their work cut out for them.
