Sunrise Mountain is 0-7 against Willow Canyon since February of 2016 but things could change on Tuesday. Sunrise Mountain will look to defend their home field against Willow Canyon at 3:45 p.m. Sunrise Mountain is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.9 runs per game this season.
Sunrise Mountain saw some tournament action last Saturday. They fell 4-1 to Gila Ridge.
Mackenzie Catalanotte spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on ten hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Sunrise Mountain saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Anisa Garcia, who scored a run while going 2-for-2.
Meanwhile, Willow Canyon had just enough and edged out Sunnyslope 11-9 on Monday. The win continues a trend for the Wildcats in their matchups with the Vikings: they've now won three in a row.
Willow Canyon got a big performance out of Ari Edwards, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and two runs. Those two hits gave Edwards a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Caylee Walding, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.
Willow Canyon kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are 4-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Willow Canyon's victory was their 16th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 7-5-1. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.8 runs over those games. As for Sunrise Mountain, their loss dropped their record down to 9-5.
Willow Canyon's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Sunrise Mountain has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 11 hits per game. It's a different story for Willow Canyon, though, as they've been averaging 9.6 hits. Given Sunrise Mountain's sizable advantage in that area, Willow Canyon will need to find a way to close that gap.
Sunrise Mountain might still be hurting after the 11-1 defeat they got from Willow Canyon in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can Sunrise Mountain avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
