Boys Lacrosse: Gilman downs McDonogh to remain unbeaten
The undefeated Gilman boys lacrosse team didn’t score nearly as often as it is accustomed to in Friday night’s Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference game against McDonogh. But a solid defense and veteran play late in the game enabled the Greyhounds to come away with a 7-4 victory over the Eagles.
Senior midfielder Greg McBride scored on the Greyhounds’ first possession and then added two more goals to get his team out to a quick 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
But McDonogh goalie Trevor Siebert kept the Eagles in the game, recording five of his 12 saves in the second quarter to shutdown the powerful Gilman offense. Patrick Toohey found the back of the net to get McDonogh on the scoreboard and trailing just 3-1 at the intermission.
After the teams battled back and forth in the second half, Nick Phillips scored to cut the Gilman lead to 5-4 with 5:40 left in the fourth quarter. But Gilman goals by Davey Emala and Marcus Holman put the game away for good for the Greyhounds.
Gilman, ranked No. 7 in the country by LaxPower.com, ups its perfect record to 8-0 (4-0 MIAA) and will host Loyola-Blakefield (7-3) on Tuesday. McDonogh (8-5, 1-4) will look to snap its four-game losing streak when it hosts Boys Latin (9-2), also on Tuesday.
More Lacrosse: Calvert Hall beats Loyola … finally
The Calvert Hall boys lacrosse team had not beaten MIAA A Conference rival Loyola-Blakefield since the 2003 season. But that drought came to a halt on Friday night when junior Phil Castronova’s hat trick helped lead the Cardinals to a 9-8 victory over the visitors.
An estimated 2,000 fans watched Calvert Hall overcome a three-goal halftime deficit before Castranova scored the game-winning goal with just 1:49 remaining. Tyler Adelsberger also chipped in two goals for the Cardinals.
"We talked about it not being for the crowd or for our parents but for the seniors this year," Castronova told the Baltimore Sun. "I don't think anyone in that locker room has had a chance to beat Loyola at the varsity level. But we played hard for the seniors, and we came back and won."
Mike Reid scored three goals and tallied an assist for Loyola.
Calvert Hall (9-1, 5-0) followed up its win over Loyola with a 22-1 thrashing of St. Johns (DC) and will travel to Archbishop Spalding (7-5) on Friday night.
Loyola-Blakefield (7-3, 3-1) will look to rebound at Gilman (8-0) on Tuesday afternoon.
Girls Lacrosse: South River edges Fallston in tournament
Brooke Griffin scored five goals and goalie Kim Kolarik made 14 saves in leading South River to a 12-11 victory over Fallston on Saturday afternoon at the annual Anne Arundel Community College tournament.
Fallston (6-1) jumped out to an early 3-1 lead by winning several draws, but South River’s Kasey Acito broke a 4-4 tie with a goal in the second quarter and Brooks added two more, giving the Seahawks a 7-4 halftime advantage.
The Seahawks (9-1) led 12-9 early in the fourth quarter, but two goals by Monica Fisher and one by Roxie Raab pulled the Cougars to within two.
Kolarik then made two big saves down the stretch to preserve the win for South River.
