Mission Valley recap Oct. 16, 2012
El Monte moved up to 413 from 463 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in Mission Valley. The Lions climbed the ranks as a result of topping Rosemead 50-34.
El Monte led the league in scoring this week after putting up 50 points on the Panthers. Brandon Martinez threw for 389 yards and six touchdowns and ran for 70 yards in the win.
Abel Barrajas was the best wideout in the league this week as Joel Sanchez's team beat Rosemead. Barrajas racked up four receptions for 100 yards. Josh Wu helped El Monte's passing attack out by catching two balls for 83 yards.
Peter Aholoka was the most productive running back in Mission Valley this week. He ran for 139 yards on 19 carries as Arroyo defeated Marc Paramo's team. Teammate Nathan Coto added to the ground attack by rushing for 34 yards.
El Monte's Martinez and Barrajas have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Martinez has thrown for 2654 yards this season, while Barrajas, a 5-foot-11 receiver, has 40 catches for 779 yards. The Knights' Aholoka leads the league in rushing yards with 746.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Panthers take on Gabrielino. As it stands, Rosemead is in fifth, while the Eagles are in first.
The Lions made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 5,077 from 5,885. The improvement was the result of 50-34 victory over the Panthers last week.
