William Campbell and Dan River are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2019, but not for long. Having just played yesterday, the William Campbell Generals will get right back to it and host the Dan River Wildcats at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. William Campbell is coming into the contest on a three-game losing streak.
On Thursday, William Campbell came up short against Chatham and fell 51-40.
Despite the loss, William Campbell got top-tier performance from Arnesia Dews, who dropped a double-double with 20 points and ten steals. That was a full 50% of William Campbell's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's posted more than a third of the team's points. Jordyn Wilson was another key player, putting up 12 points.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Dan River). They claimed a resounding 48-17 victory over Nelson County. With the Wildcats ahead 29-8 at the half, the game was all but over already.
Dan River found their leader in freshman Liza Maxey, who went 6-for-11 to rack up 19 points and three steals. Maxey is becoming a predictor of Dan River's success: when she posts at least three steals the team is 2-1 (and 0-16 when she doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Samaria Knick, who earned six points in addition to ten rebounds and three steals.
Dan River smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 14 offensive boards in 11 consecutive matchups.
William Campbell's defeat dropped their record down to 10-10. As for Dan River, their win ended a 19-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-17.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: William Campbell has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 27.2 boards per game. However, it's not like Dan River struggles in that department as they've been averaging 40 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
William Campbell strolled past Dan River in their previous meeting back in January by a score of 46-32. Does William Campbell have another victory up their sleeve, or will Dan River turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
