FARMINGTON, N.M. - After three lead changes,
St. Pius X (Albuquerque, N.M.) took the lead for good when with 4:00 to go in the fourth quarter and held on to upset
Piedra Vista (Farmington, N.M.) 30-28 on Saturday.
The Panthers pulled ahead on a passing touchdown, and subsequently went into halftime leading 21-14. The Sartans scored the winning points with a field goal that came in the fourth quarter.
Despite scoring 13 points in the third, St. Pius X still trailed by 1 point going into the fourth quarter. But three points in the fourth helped SPX pull out the victory.
The loss came as a surprise for Piedra Vista, which entered the game ranked No. 9 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for New Mexico, while the Albuquerque school was ranked No. 29.
Ryan Montoya made a difference for PV. The freshman quarterback threw two touchdowns and kicked one extra point.
TJ Sanchez played well for the Sartans in the victory. He ran for two touchdowns.
The defeat comes as a step back for Piedra Vista, which notched a 54-0 victory over Bernalillo in its previous outing. The win was a nice bounce back for St. Pius X, which lost to Aztec last week, 46-27.
Piedra Vista (6-1) goes up against Kirtland Central in a 4A District 1 game matchup next week, while St. Pius X (4-4) locks horns with Del Norte in a 4A District 5 game.
