Even though the Rivera Raiders have not done well against the San Benito Greyhounds recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Rivera sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 46-44 win over San Benito. The win was all the more spectacular given Rivera's disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 761st, while San Benito is ranked 340th).
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Rivera to victory, but perhaps none more so than Lorraine Perez, who scored 11 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Xandria Johnson, who scored ten points.
When it comes to explaining why San Benito lost, one person who can't be blamed is Lorena Segura. Despite the final result, she scored 15 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Segura has scored all season. Jakeida Ibarra was another key contributor, scoring six points.
Rivera's victory bumped their record up to 15-19. As for San Benito, their defeat dropped their record down to 21-9.
Rivera will be playing in front of their home fans against Weslaco at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The timing isn't great for Rivera: they have been struggling with four straight losses at home, while Weslaco has snatched up six consecutive wins on the road. As for San Benito, they will face off against Harlingen at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully San Benito focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 13 on Friday.
