5A District 1 recap October 1, 2013
Rio Rancho and Clovis played the closest game in 5A District 1 this week, with Rio Rancho eventually emerging with a 62-59 victory.
Cibola took down West Mesa 35-6 last week, the largest margin of any game. Derek Martinez threw for 112 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for 67 yards in the win.
Volcano Vista's dynamic duo of Josh Williams and Michael Anderson proved tough for Onate to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Williams threw for 170 yards and 2 touchdowns and Anderson had 127 yards receiving. Isiah Espinoza helped Volcano Vista's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 29 yards.
Elijah Winfield made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Cougars beat the Mustangs. The 5-foot-9 senior grabbed 3 interceptions.
Cleveland's offense cannot be tamed this season and the Storm feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Kian Homme has thrown for 761 yards and 7 touchdowns this season, while Sterling Napier has 17 catches for 245 yards.
The Rams led the league in scoring this week after putting up 62 points on the Wildcats.
