Softball Recap: Lawrence County Now 3-1 over Last Four Games

It was a proper cat-fight when Lawrence County duked it out with McComb on Tuesday. The Cougars' pitcher stepped up to hand the Tigers a 19-0 shutout. Considering the Cougars have won eight matches by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Marleigh Grace Russell made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, eight RBI, and one double. Those eight RBI gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Adaya Ball, who got on base in all three of her plate appearances with three runs, four RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in February of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Addie Raye Pennington, who scored three runs while going 2-for-2.

Lawrence County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .808. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Lawrence County has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-8 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for McComb, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-4-2 record this season.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Lawrence County will square off against rival Richland at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, McComb is set to challenge their familiar foe Raymond at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
