The New Kent Trojans will square off against the Poquoson Islanders at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as New Kent comes in on 11 and Poquoson on seven.
New Kent had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the nine-run drubbing they dealt Warhill on Tuesday. The Trojans put the hurt on the Lions with a sharp 10-1 victory. Considering the Trojans have won 15 matchups by more than seven runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Abbie Kegley made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She tossed seven innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one home run and four RBI.
In other batting news, Hannah Tober was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Mariah Leonard, who went 3-for-4 with three runs and one double.
Meanwhile, Poquoson posted their closest win since April 4th on Thursday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Warhill 3-1.
Natalie Klochak spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on six hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Tinley Goodson, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Brooklyn Mason, who got on base in two of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.
New Kent pushed their record up to 17-3 with the win, which was their tenth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for Poquoson, their record is now 17-2.
Tuesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. New Kent hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .389. However, it's not like Poquoson struggles in that department as they've averaged .356. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went New Kent's way against Poquoson in their previous matchup back in April, as New Kent made off with an 11-1 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Trojans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
