PLANT CITY, Fla. - After taking the lead in the fourth quarter,
Newsome (Lithia, Fla.) held on for a 21-14 victory over
Durant (Plant City, Fla.) on Saturday. The difference for the Wolves was
Clint Carnell ran for a touchdown.
After trailing 14-0 at the half, the Cougars went ahead on a touchdown with 6:00 left in the third. Newsome grabbed hold of the lead when Carnell ran for a touchdown with 8:00 left in the fourth quarter, and never relinquished it.
The loss came as a surprise for Durant, which entered the game ranked No. 17 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for Florida, while NHS was ranked No. 104. DHS came into the game having won two of the past eight games between the two teams.
The Lithia school's standout player in the win was
Will Worth. The senior quarterback threw one touchdown. He has now scored 17 touchdowns on the season.
Jamarlon Hamilton played well for the Plant City school. The senior ran for two touchdowns. He has now scored 19 touchdowns on the season.
Coming into the game the Wolves had allowed 21.6 points per game this year. The defense really stepped up, holding the Cougars well below their season average of 35.8 points scored per game.
NHS got revenge for last year's 33-14 loss to Durant with the victory.
The defeat comes as a step back for Durant, which notched a 34-7 victory over Tampa Bay Tech in its previous outing.
In a playoff game next week Durant (11-1) takes on Newsome, and Newsome (8-4) will go up against Durant also in a playoff game.
