The Penfield Patriots put another one in the bag on Wednesday to keep their perfect season alive. They put the hurt on Gates Chili with a sharp 76-53 win. Given Penfield's advantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 17th, while Gates Chili is ranked 577th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Despite the loss, Gates Chili saw an underclassman step up: Joey Vigerzi scored 20 points along with two steals. Vigerzi is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Jeremy Tantalo, who scored 12 points along with eight rebounds.
Penfield's win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-0. As for Gates Chili, they have not been sharp recently as the team's lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-13 record this season.
Penfield will head out on the road to challenge Rush-Henrietta at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Rush-Henrietta knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past seven matchups -- so hopefully Penfield likes a good challenge. As for Gates Chili, they will be playing at home against Webster Schroeder at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Gates Chili focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 13 on Wednesday.
