The Apple Valley Sun Devils will square off against the University Prep Jaguars at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Apple Valley is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.5 runs per game this season.
Apple Valley had been on a three-game streak of scoring at least ten runs, but Sultana put an end to it on Thursday. The Sun Devils took a 4-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Sultans. The loss continues a trend for the Sun Devils in their meetings with the Sultans: they've now lost six in a row.
Apple Valley saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Samantha Dollar, who went 2-for-4 with one run.
Meanwhile, University Prep came tearing into Monday's matchup with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They were the clear victors by a 19-9 margin over the Saints. The Jaguars might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 13 contests by six runs or more this season.
Brie (Brieana) Villanueva made a splash no matter where she played. She pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off three hits. Villanueva was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Paityn Zimmerman and Saidy Gonzalez did most of the damage at the plate: Zimmerman went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI, while Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with three runs and two doubles. Another player making a difference was Kayla Lopez, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run.
University Prep was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .441. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .300 or higher in seven consecutive games.
University Prep pushed their record up to 18-4 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Apple Valley, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-8-1.
Wednesday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Apple Valley has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .462. However, it's not like University Prep struggles in that department as they've averaged .448. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Apple Valley was able to grind out a solid victory over University Prep in their previous meeting back in March of 2024, winning 12-7. Do the Sun Devils have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Jaguars turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
