Two dominant players in Lainee Nein and Bobbi Starkebaum are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Sedgwick County Cougars will head out on the road to square off against the Haxtun Fightin' Bulldogs at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Sedgwick County is looking to tack on another W to their five-game streak on the road dating back to last season.
Sedgwick County scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Friday. They enjoyed a cozy 59-41 win over Caliche. Given Sedgwick County's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 21st, while Caliche is ranked 89th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Nein and Abigail Dille were among the main playmakers for Sedgwick County as the former scored 20 points along with eight rebounds and the latter dropped a double-double on 21 points and ten rebounds. That's the first time this season that Dille pulled down eight or more rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Olivia Ingram, who scored six points.
Meanwhile, Haxtun had to endure a 14-game losing streak dating back to last season, but that streak is no more. They took their match at home on Friday with ease, bagging a 71-27 win over Peetz. That looming 71-27 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for Haxtun yet this season.
Sedgwick County's victory bumped their record up to 7-1. As for Haxtun, their victory ended a five-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 1-9.
Sedgwick County didn't have too much breathing room in their match against Haxtun in their previous matchup back in January of 2023, but they still walked away with a 46-40 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Sedgwick County since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
