Sumner and Puyallup are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2021, but likely not for long. The Spartans will be playing in front of their home fans against the Vikings at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Sumner is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.1 runs per game this season.
Sumner came into their game on Saturday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They came up short against Graham-Kapowsin, falling 9-3. The contest marked the Spartans' lowest-scoring match so far this season.
Emma Hixon was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double. Riley Meyers was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one double.
Meanwhile, Puyallup fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Emerald Ridge on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 5-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Jaguars. The Vikings' defeat signaled the end of their six-game winning streak.
Kiera Thomas spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned runs on 11 hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Puyallup saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sophia Wright, who went 2-for-3 with one run.
Puyallup's loss dropped their record down to 8-4. As for Sumner, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-3.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Monday. Sumner hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.5 home runs per game. However, it's not like Puyallup struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.8 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Sumner was able to grind out a solid victory over Puyallup when the teams last played back in March, winning 7-2. Will the Spartans repeat their success, or do the Vikings have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
