Wakefield's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Lyla Bagwell led the charge by putting up eight points along with seven boards and four steals. Bagwell is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last four games she's played. Maddison McIntyre was another key player, earning eight points and six assists.
Meanwhile, Hoggard faced Rolesville in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. Hoggard strolled past Rolesville with points to spare, taking the game 59-45.
Hoggard's win came from a few key players Wakefield will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Tristan Shivers, who shot 55% from the field on her way to 20 points and seven assists. That makes it three consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Hoggard's points. Another player making a difference was AK Chance, who went 5-for-6 to rack up 14 points and six rebounds.
Hoggard smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've posted since back in January.
Wakefield's victory was their 13th straight at home, which pushed their record up to 25-3. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 63.6 points over those games. As for Hoggard, their win bumped their record up to 30-1.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Wakefield has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 22.2 boards per game. However, it's not like Hoggard struggles in that department as they've been averaging 30.3 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Wakefield came up short against Hoggard when the teams last played back in March of 2024, falling 56-45. Can Wakefield avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
