The Wakefield Bombers will face off against the Marion Warriors at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Wakefield is hoping to put an end to a six-game streak of away losses dating back to last season.
Back in December of 2023, Wakefield ended up a good deal behind Canton-Galva and lost 55-36.
Despite the defeat, Wakefield had strong showings from Paige Smith, who scored 15 points along with nine rebounds and four steals, and Allison Adams, who scored 13 points along with nine rebounds and six assists. That was a full 41.7% of Wakefield's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Grace Rohr, who scored five points along with ten rebounds.
Even though they lost, Wakefield smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Canton-Galva only pulled down four offensive rebounds.
Meanwhile, Marion came up short against Remington on Thursday and fell 44-31. While losing is never fun, Marion can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 235th, while Remington is ranked 59th).
Marion's loss came about despite a quality game from Grace Hett, who scored 14 points along with two steals.
Wakefield's record now sits at 2-5. Marion's record now sits at 2-6.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Wakefield have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 29.4 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Marion struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 21.8 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Wakefield came up short against Marion when the teams last played back in January of 2023, falling 41-29. Can Wakefield avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
