STARKVILLE, Miss. – Seniors
Monica Downey of
Madison (San Diego, Calif.) High School,
Alyssa Gould of
Brookfield (Brookfield, Ohio) High School,
Allie Reynolds of
Labette County (Altamont, Kan.) High School, junior
Maddy Peres of
Ida Baker (Cape Coral, Fla.) High School, and sophomore
Jess Harkness of
Foran (Milford, Conn.) High School have all been named as the High School Players of the Week for their respective regions by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for games played through April 7, 2012.
Representing the West Region, Downey hit an amazing .933 in a 5 game stretch leading Madison to its first ever Vegas tourney title. The senior also tallied 10 runs, 4 RBI, and was a perfect 14 for 14 in stolen bases. On the season Downey owns a .679 average and and on base percentage of .702. Her efforts have helped the Warhawks get off to a 15-0 start this season, and a #25 national rank.
In the North Region, Gould also had an outstanding week at the plate. The senior hit .750 for the week with 5 doubles, a homerun and 14 RBI. In her last three games she has been perfect at the plate. She also was sharp in the circle going 2 - 1 on the week, including tossing back to back 2 hitters over Memorial (Ohio) and McKinley (Ohio). Gould helped the Warriors finish 4 -1 for the week, improving their record to 7-3 overall this season.
Reynolds represents the South Central Region this week. The senior scattered 4 hits over 19 innings to finish 4 - 0 for the week, highlighted by tossing 4 perfect innings in a win over Field Kindley (Kan.). Reynolds has yet to allow an earned run in 37 innings pitched this season, and has held opposing hitters to a .069 batting average. Her efforts have helped the Grizzlies record improve to 8-0, and a #1 ranking in the state.
Out of the South Region, Peres finished the week with a perfect 0.00 ERA going 3-0 in as many starts. The junior has dominated opponents in the circle this season. She has given up only 19 hits in 68 innings pitched, only one of which was an extra base hit (a double). Peres has struck out 137 and has held opposing teams to a .084 average. On the season the junior owns a .010 ERA and has helped the Bulldogs improve to 14-1 on the season.
Rounding out this week's awards from the East Region, Harkness is this year's first sophomore to earn MaxPreps player of the week honors. She tossed 3 shutouts finishing the week with a 0.00 ERA. Harkness has struck out 39 batters in 26 innings pitched and has yet to yield an extra base hit. The wins helped the Lions get off to a 3-0 start this season.
