Neumann-Goretti is 7-1 against Conwell-Egan Catholic since May of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Saints will host the Eagles at 4:00 p.m. Neumann-Goretti's pitching crew has only allowed four runs per game this season, so Conwell-Egan Catholic's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Things were looking good for Neumann-Goretti after they put the first run on the board on Saturday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They took a 6-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of Holy Ghost Prep. The defeat continues a trend for the Saints in their meetings with the Firebirds: they've now lost four in a row.
Neumann-Goretti got a good showing from Nick Morici, who tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. That's the first time Morici hasn't allowed a single hit since back in March.
On the hitting side, Neumann-Goretti saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Christian Meitzler, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Another was Nicholas Cerone, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one RBI.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Conwell-Egan Catholic, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Wednesday. They came out on top against Central by a score of 6-3 on Thursday.
Joey Ortiz spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on five hits. Conwell-Egan Catholic is 2-1 when Ortiz allows two or fewer earned runs, but 5-6 otherwise.
At the plate, Denny Fife was excellent, going 1-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Connor Landau, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and one stolen base.
The victory got Conwell-Egan Catholic back to even at 7-7. As for Neumann-Goretti, their loss dropped their record down to 8-8-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Neumann-Goretti has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Conwell-Egan Catholic struggles in that department as they've been averaging 9.1 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Neumann-Goretti came out on top in a nail-biter against Conwell-Egan Catholic in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, sneaking past 1-0. Do the Saints have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Eagles turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
