There's no place like home for the Madisonville Mustangs, who bounced back after a tough loss on the road last Friday. They put the hurt on Rusk with a sharp 60-35 win on Tuesday. With Madisonville ahead 31-7 at the half, the matchup was all but over already.
Madisonville's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Ke'Myreul Wheaton led the charge by scoring 15 points along with eight rebounds and seven steals. Wheaton hasn't dropped below two steals for seven straight games. Quin'eysia Shaffer was another key contributor, scoring 13 points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Several Eagles players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Damaya Hart, who scored 14 points along with two steals.
Madisonville's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 22-5. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.8 points per game. As for Rusk, they are on a nine-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-20.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Madisonville will square off against the Wildcats at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Palestine will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings (they are ranked 591st, while the Mustangs are ranked 105th). As for Rusk, they will head out on the road to take on the Fightin' Indians at 6:15 p.m. on Friday. Jacksonville is coming into the match hot, having won their last five games.
