The Copper Canyon Aztecs had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 14.5 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Youngker 28-25. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Copper Canyon also won the last time the pair played on January 9th.
Leading Copper Canyon to victory were Zalaya Dupre and Bri'ann Felix. Dupre dropped a double-double on ten points and 20 rebounds, while Felix almost dropped a triple-double on 13 points, 12 rebounds, and nine steals. That makes it eight consecutive games in which Felix has scored at least a third of Copper Canyon's points.
Youngker's loss came despite strong showings from Naomi Copeland and Ashlee Gonzalez. Copeland scored ten points, while Gonzalez scored nine points along with 11 rebounds and three steals. Gonzalez is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last ten games she's played.
Copper Canyon is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games, which provided a massive bump to their 10-11 record this season. As for Youngker, their loss dropped their record down to 10-9.
Copper Canyon will head out on the road to challenge Independence at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Independence has now lost ten straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 8. As for Youngker, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Buckeye at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Buckeye will be looking to extend their current eight-game winning streak.
