The Monroe Redhawks lost against the Sun Valley Spartans back in January, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. Monroe was the victim of a tough 46-25 defeat at the hands of Sun Valley. While losing is never fun, Monroe can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 470th, while Sun Valley is ranked 175th).
Despite the loss, Monroe still got an impressive performance from Saniya Gingham, who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine rebounds. Gingham has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last four times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jahdallia Montgomery, who scored two points along with six rebounds and four steals.
Sun Valley's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Tyra Robinson, who scored 11 points along with four steals. Robinson is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Mariah Garcia, who scored nine points along with five rebounds and three steals.
Monroe's loss dropped their record down to 6-13. As for Sun Valley, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 12-10.
Monroe will be playing in front of their home fans against Parkwood at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Monroe focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 28 on Wednesday. As for Sun Valley, they will head out on the road to face off against Marvin Ridge at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Marvin Ridge is coming into the matchup with nine straight wins at home, meaning Sun Valley will have to defend against a squad hungry for a victory.
