The Cumberland Pirates will head out on the road to face off against the Okaw Valley Timberwolves at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Cumberland focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 17 on Tuesday.
Last Tuesday, Cumberland came up short against Cerro Gordo/Bement and fell 51-41.
Cumberland's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Blake Mcmechan, who scored nine points along with five assists, and Zack Harmon who scored nine points along with 11 rebounds. Those five assists set a new season-high mark for him. The team also got some help courtesy of Zack Buescher, who scored six points.
Even though they lost, Cumberland were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Okaw Valley entered their tilt with Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg with three consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with four. The stars were shining brightly for Okaw Valley in a 82-65 victory over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg on Tuesday. Okaw Valley's offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.
Cumberland's defeat was their third straight at home, which bumped their record down to 5-6. As for Okaw Valley, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a massive bump to their 5-5 record this season.
Cumberland skirted past Okaw Valley 51-49 when the teams last played back in November. The rematch might be a little tougher for Cumberland since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
