Calais is 0-10 against Washington Academy since May of 2019 but things could change on Wednesday. The Blue Devils are taking a road trip to face off against the Raiders at 4:30 p.m.
On Monday, Calais came up short against Machias and fell 6-1. The Blue Devils have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Calais saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Noah White, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Washington Academy ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They won by a run and slipped past Bucksport 7-6.
Trevor Shimabukuro and James Welch were major factors while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Shimabukuro struck out ten batters over 6.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off three hits. Meanwhile, Welch tossed 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. That's the most strikeouts Shimabukuro has posted since back in May. At the plate, Shimabukuro went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs, while Welch went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. Welch has been hot, having posted at least one stolen base the last six times he's played.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Colby Moholland, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in May. Parker Cates also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.
Washington Academy pushed their record up to 13-2 with the victory, which was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Calais, they now have a losing record of 6-7.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Calais has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Washington Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Calais suffered a grim 10-0 defeat to Washington Academy in their previous meeting back in May. Can the Blue Devils avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
