The Centennial Hawks were the 52-28 winner over the Mayfield Trojans when they last played one another back in February, but their luck changed this time around. Centennial took a 36-32 hit to the loss column at the hands of Mayfield. While losing is never fun, Centennial can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 41st, while Mayfield is ranked seventh).
Defeat or not, Centennial got some senior leadership from Audi Torrez who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds and Elena Gonzales who scored nine points. Torrez scored a full 46.9% of Centennial's points, the fourth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Mayfield was led to victory by Victoria Kirker and Jazlene Ruiz. Kirker scored 12 points along with five steals, while Ruiz scored 12 points along with six rebounds and five steals. The game was Ruiz's fifth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ceanna Mckines, who scored six points along with nine rebounds.
Centennial's loss dropped their record down to 3-3. As for Mayfield, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-1.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Centennial and Hobbs will face off at 7:00 p.m. on December 19th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Hobbs knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past seven games -- so hopefully Centennial likes a good challenge. Mayfield and Cleveland will face off at 5:00 p.m. on December 22nd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday.
