Desert Mountain has gone 7-2 against Willow Canyon recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Wolves will welcome the Wildcats at 4:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Willow Canyon will face off against a team with plenty of momentum: Desert Mountain extended their winning streak to 23 on Saturday. The Wolves' pitchers stepped up to hand Campo Verde a 13-0 shutout.
Lilly 'Goose' Goodwin was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out ten over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 21 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
In other batting news, Zoe Horning was a standout: she went 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was McKinsey Beyer, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Desert Mountain kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in seven consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Willow Canyon walked away with it. They were the clear victors by a 15-7 margin over the Cougars on Saturday. That's two games straight that the Wildcats have won by exactly eight runs.
Mataya Olson was incredible, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI. That's the most doubles she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Izzy Ray, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Desert Mountain pushed their record up to 26-1-1 with the victory, which was their 23rd straight at home dating back to last season. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.1 runs on average over those games. As for Willow Canyon, they are on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 15 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-9-1 record this season.
Desert Mountain's speedy runners might be the difference in Tuesday's game. The Wolves have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.4 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Willow Canyon, though, as they've been averaging an even more impressive 1.2 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Desert Mountain continue to outrun the ball?
Desert Mountain skirted past Willow Canyon 2-0 in their previous matchup back in April. Will the Wolves repeat their success, or do the Wildcats have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
