Socorro hasn't had much luck against Pebble Hills recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Bulldogs will head out to face off against the Spartans at 7:30 p.m. Socorro has given up an average of 33.4 points per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Socorro is headed into the contest out to prove that what happened against Franklin on Friday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. The Bulldogs were outmatched by the Cougars and fell 52-7. While losing is never fun, the Bulldogs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 838th, while the Cougars are ranked 248th).
The match pitted two dominant backs against one another in Adrian Hunt and Ernie Powers. Powers had a great game and rushed for 279 yards and three TDs while picking up 16.4 yards per carry. Meanwhile, Hunt did his best for the losing side, rushing for 109 yards and one score.
Meanwhile, Pebble Hills didn't have quite enough to beat Eastwood on Friday and fell 17-14. While the Spartans had to settle for second, they closed the game well in the third quarter, where they outscored the Troopers 8-3.
Despite the loss, Pebble Hills saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Jaime Ortega picked up a sack, forced one fumble, and made eight total tackles.
Don't try to pin the team's loss on the defense: they kept the trenches locked down and allowed a mere 2.9 yards per carry. The team can thank Noe Villegas for the heroic effort on defense: he. Pebble Hills' ground attack was stronger, having averaged 4.9.
Pebble Hills' defense didn't let the opposing QB, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for four sacks. That dominant display was truly a team effort as four different players picked up one apiece. They got some further help from Ortega: he picked up a sack, forced one fumble, and made eight total tackles.
Socorro now has a losing record of 3-4. As for Pebble Hills, their defeat was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 5-2.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Socorro has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 260.4 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Pebble Hills struggles in that department as they've been averaging 166 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Socorro was taken down by Pebble Hills 55-26 in their previous matchup back in October of 2024. That contest was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Bulldogs were down 42-6.
