The Dwyer Panthers will face off against the Royal Palm Beach Wildcats at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Dwyer is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.
Last Friday, Dwyer came up short against Vero Beach and fell 9-4. The Panthers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Dwyer got a good showing from Michael Fredel, who pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Fredel has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than one walk in seven consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Dom Pecoraro was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. That home run marked the first that he launched this season. Owen Hewitt was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, it can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Royal Palm Beach had no problem doing just that on Monday. They had just enough and edged out the Hawks 5-4. The win was some much needed relief for the Wildcats as it spelled an end to their nine-game losing streak.
Christopher De Gara Jr tossed a big game, striking out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off two hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Santino Spidalieri, who scored two runs while going 4-for-4. He has become a key player for Royal Palm Beach: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 4-17 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Robert Gonzalez, who scored two runs while going 1-for-3.
Royal Palm Beach was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .387. They are 2-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Royal Palm Beach's victory bumped their record up to 9-17. As for Dwyer, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-10.
Dwyer beat Royal Palm Beach 11-6 in their previous meeting back in March. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Panthers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
