Massac County and Carterville are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2018, but likely not for long. The Patriots are taking a road trip to take on the Lions at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
Massac County had taken Benton down for three straight games at home, but that winning streak came to an end on Thursday. The Patriots took a 7-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Rangers.
Natalie Evans made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Riley Baumgart was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Carterville had already won 12 in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.8 runs) and they went ahead and made it 13 on Wednesday. They never let the Eagles get on the board and left with an 11-0 victory. The Lions' pitching crew has been rock solid lately; the team hasn't given up a run in their last five matches.
Taryn Ford made a splash no matter where she played. She tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one run and one double.
In other pitching news, Masyn Kries looked comfortable as she pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. What's more, she posted five strikeouts, the most she's had since back in March.
Back at the plate, Colbie Bennett was excellent, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.
Carterville hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in nine consecutive contests.
Carterville pushed their record up to 17-2 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Massac County, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-10 record this season.
Massac County might still be hurting after the 12-2 defeat they got from Carterville in their previous matchup last Monday. Can the Patriots avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
