The Hawthorne Cougars's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their fourth straight loss. They were beaten by Leuzinger 86-31. Hawthorne has not had much luck with the Olympians recently, as the team's come up short the last four times they've met.
Despite the defeat, Hawthorne had strong showings from Jakobi Smith, who scored 13 points, and Alfredo Ramirez, who scored 11 points.
Leading Leuzinger to victory were Godspower Otuonye and Malachi Knight. Otuonye dropped a double-double on 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Knight scored 25 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Otuonye has scored all season. Stephen Charles was another key contributor, almost dropping a double-double on nine points and 13 rebounds.
Hawthorne has not been sharp recently as the team's lost eight of their last nine contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-17 record this season. As for Leuzinger, the win was the tenth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 20-7.
Hawthorne does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Leuzinger will look to defend their home court on Wednesday against the Spartans at 7:00 p.m. Schurr will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps California Rankings (they are ranked 434th, while the Olympians are ranked 215th).
