Video: Top 25 volleyball rankingsCalifornia's SoCal Open Division bracket features five ranked teams.
As expected, the CIF Southern and San Diego section playoffs shook things up this week as six teams in the MaxPreps Top 25 national high school volleyball rankings beat up on each other in what is only the opening stanza of this heavyweight fight.
Five of the six — Torrey Pines (San Diego), Redondo Union (Redondo Beach), Mater Dei (Santa Ana), Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) and Marymount (Los Angeles) — now get to cannibalize one another in the wild CIF SoCal Open Division bracket. The sixth Golden State Top 25 team, Marin Catholic (Kentfield), earned a No. 1 seed in the NorCal Open Division field and likely will face the weary winner of the Southern California field.
SoCal top-seed Torrey Pines awaits the Marymount-Cathedral Catholic winner in the semifinals, while No. 2 Redondo Union gets an instant rematch with the third-seeded Monarchs in a walk-over semifinal match. The Sea Hawks downed Mater Dei in the Southern Section finals 25-19, 25-16, 16-25, 25-21. It was the second win over the Monarchs this season as Redondo took an epic five-set match victory earlier in the season.
Elsewhere, New Castle (Ind.) won its fourth straight Hoosier State title, this one in 4A after three straight in 3A, to remain at No. 1 this week. The Trojans held serve all season behind sisters Mabrey and Melani Shaffmaster and excellent supporting cast, stubbing their toe once to nationally ranked Assumption (Louisville, Ky.)
The four-peat is impressive, especially considering the bump up in division, but it remains to be seen if New Castle's resume is enough to hold off the potential California or Texas champion.
Green Hope (Cary, N.C.) earned its fourth consecutive Tar Heel State 4A title, capping the brilliant careers of Sydney Dowler and Alexis Engelbrecht. Other state title winners in the Top 25 include Nation Ford (Fort Mill, S.C.), which swept through Dorman and Lexington to win the AAAAA crown. Also, Walton (Marietta, Ga.) jumps into the Top 25 after its 3-0 AAAAAAA title win over Lassiter.
