Two dominant signal callers in Hudson Hutcheson and Evan Minjarez are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Frenship Tigers will head out on the road to face off against the Eastwood Troopers at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams are coming into the game red-hot, with Frenship sitting on three straight wins and Eastwood on nine.
Even though Frenship has not done well against San Angelo Central recently (they were 1-6 in their previous seven matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Frenship walked away with a 41-34 win over San Angelo Central. Given Frenship's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 47th, while San Angelo Central is ranked 362nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Frenship's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Hutcheson led the charge by throwing for 413 yards and five touchdowns while completing 83.8% of his passes. Hutcheson has been hot recently, having posted 300 or more passing yards the last six times he's played. Leyton Stone also deserves a shout-out for his four touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Eastwood stacked a third blowout onto their ever-increasing hoard on Friday. They took their matchup on the road with ease, bagging a 56-22 win over Eastlake.
It was another big night for Minjarez, who threw for 356 yards and three touchdowns while completing 74.2% of his passes, and also rushed for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Another player making a difference was Jayden Martinez , who rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns on only 14 carries.
Their wins bumped Frenship to 8-2 and Eastwood to 9-1.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's contest: Frenship has been unstoppable in the air this season, having averaged 368.2 passing yards per game. However, it's not like Eastwood struggles in that department as they've been averaging 305.7 per game. It's looking like Friday's contest might be a classic QB duel. Frenship came up short against Eastwood in their previous matchup back in November of 2015, falling 47-40. Thankfully for Frenship, Mark Torrez (who threw for 545 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 10.9 yards per attempt, and also rushed for 149 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 7.1 yards per carry) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
