Basketball Recap: Sean Maberry's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Roxana over Staunton

Roxana was the 46-29 winner over Staunton when they last played one another back in November of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. The Roxana Shells fell 56-46 to the Staunton Bulldogs on Saturday. While losing is never fun, the Shells can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 325th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 146th).

Several Shells players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Sean Maberry, who posted 11 points and seven rebounds. What's more, Maberry also racked up four assists, the most he's had since back in November of 2024. Cohen Dugan was another key player, putting up 13 points and three blocks.

This is the second loss in a row for Roxana and nudges their season record down to 10-14. As for Staunton, their win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 20-4.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Roxana will take on Gillespie at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Gillespie knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past ten games -- so hopefully Roxana likes a good challenge. As for Staunton, they will challenge Edwardsville at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Edwardsville will roll in looking for their sixth straight victory, something Staunton surely won't give up without a fight.
