If the Genoa-Hugo/Karval Pirates were feeling good off their 45-17 takedown of the Calhan Bulldogs last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Genoa-Hugo/Karval was just a bucket shy of victory on Friday and fell 39-38 to Byers. Genoa-Hugo/Karval was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Byers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2023.
Several Pirates players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Rhegan Sitzman, who scored eight points along with five rebounds. Kazlei Vaughn was another key contributor, scoring four points along with five rebounds.
Genoa-Hugo/Karval has been struggling recently, as they've lost four of their last five matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-5 record this season. As for Byers, their victory bumped their record up to 2-6.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Genoa-Hugo/Karval will take on Merino at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Merino will be coming into the match with an undefeated record on the line. As for Byers, they will be playing at home against Dolores Huerta Prep at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Hopefully Dolores Huerta Prep focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 11 last Wednesday.
