The Peninsula Seahawks will square off against the Southridge Suns at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
While Peninsula's win against Auburn Mountainview wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Seahawks sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 10-8 victory over the Lions on Saturday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Seahawks have posted since April 18th.
Meghan Webster was a major factor no matter where she played. She tossed 6.1 innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. Webster was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Izzy Michaels was a standout: she went 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. Paige Jones was another key player, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with two RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, Southridge got the win against Kennewick on Friday by a conclusive 12-2. Considering the Suns have won nine matchups by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Like Peninsula, Southridge also got a great game from a two-way player: Avery Garvey. On the mound, she pitched five innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits. Garvey was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three runs and one RBI. Those three runs gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Faith Hickman was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, six RBI, and two runs. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Jadyn Holdren, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Southridge was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .462. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Kennewick only posted a batting average of .300.
Southridge has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-11 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.8 runs over those games. As for Peninsula, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 16-9.
Southridge's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Peninsula has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.8 hits per game. It's a different story for Southridge, though, as they've been averaging 8.7 hits. Given Peninsula's sizable advantage in that area, the Suns will need to find a way to close that gap.
