4A Foothills recap Oct. 3, 2012
Pueblo West extended the longest winning streak in 4A Foothills this week by beating Cheyenne Mountain, 25-23. The win marks fifth in a row for the the Cyclones.
Canon City and Pueblo Centennial played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Canon City eventually emerging with a 14-13 victory. Austin Douglas ran for 82 yards and caught two passes for 23 yards in the win.
Derek Jackson was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 43 carries, he ran for 263 yards as Pueblo West fell to the Tigers. Austin Bass also contributed to the rushing game with 42 yards on the ground.
Cody Groff put up the best numbers through the air as Mesa Ridge defeated Pueblo South. He finished with seven completions for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Groff's favorite target this week was Bryce Johnson, who caught one pass for 27 yards.
Duden was the best wideout in 4A Foothills this week as Pueblo Centennial lost to Canon City. Duden racked up two receptions for 121 yards. Wyatt Rollins helped Pueblo Centennial's passing attack out by catching one ball for 11 yards.
Avery Currington provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Mike Palumbo's team fell to Tom O'Rourke's team. He completed three passes for 132 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 156 yards.
Widefield's Mario Sanabria and DQ Baker have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Sanabria has thrown for 862 yards this season, while Baker, a 5-foot-7 receiver, has 16 catches for 291 yards. Jackson from Monte Pinkerton's team leads the league in rushing with 978 yards.
Jackson of the the Cyclones is only 22 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season.
Two of the top units in the league will face off this week when the Grizzlies take on the Gladiators. Mesa Ridge's offense has scored 210 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while Widefield has allowed only 188 on the year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Pueblo West takes on Canon City. The Cyclones are in first place, while the Tigers are in third place.
The Indians made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 2,215 from 2,974. The advance stemmed from a 25-23 victory over Cheyenne Mountain last week.
