Even though the Big Valley Cardinals have not done well against the Tulelake Honkers recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Big Valley narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past Tulelake 56-53. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory Big Valley has posted yet this season.
Big Valley's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Juan Flores, who scored 14 points. Flores continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last five games he's played. Another player making a difference was Leif Lewis, who scored 12 points along with five rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why Tulelake lost, one person who can't be blamed is Leo Leon. Despite the final result, he scored 26 points. Daniel Garcia was another key contributor, scoring 12 points.
The win makes it two in a row for Big Valley and bumps their season record up to 7-3. As for Tulelake, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-13.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Big Valley will take on Hayfork at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Hayfork focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up nine on Wednesday. As for Tulelake, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Happy Camp at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Happy Camp focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 back in December of 2023.
