Avon Grove and Downingtown West are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2019, but likely not for long. The Red Devils will welcome the Whippets at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday.
Avon Grove managed to slip by Bayard Rustin the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Red Devils came up short against the Golden Knights on Friday, falling 9-3.
Logan Nelson made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored a run while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Myles Raymond, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Downingtown West). They were the clear victors by a 16-1 margin over Kennett on Tuesday. The victory was some much needed relief for the Whippets as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Austen Frye looked comfortable as he struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and only one walk).
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Brett Connolly, who fired off two home runs, seven RBI, and three runs while going 2-for-2. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 3.7 RBI per game. Jake Downie was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-2.
Downingtown West always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .625. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Avon Grove's defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 4-5. As for Downingtown West, they picked up their first home win, bumping their record up to 2-6.
Avon Grove couldn't quite finish off Downingtown West in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 and fell 2-0. Can the Red Devils avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
